I've always loved everything about fall - the smells (decomposing leaves, wood burning), the feel of the cool air (though not that cool lately!), the energy, as we shift from summer into winter here on the east coast. On my morning walks these last several weeks, I've been observing trails of leaves - often they seem to be showing me 'the path' to take.
We each have our own path to walk in this lifetime - however, it can sometimes be challenging to not only see our path clearly but to also know that we're on the 'right' path - the path of what is true, what is right for us.
On my walk the other morning, illuminated by a stunningly striking sunrise, large piles of leaves obscured my path at times. Sometimes our path seems similarly unclear - it can be muddy, or simply hard to decipher. Which way do we go? How do we choose? There may be an alternate path, one we didn't see before but one that becomes clear. And you might also discover that the path you've been following is now not necessarily the right path for you, at this time in your life.
I recently read the book 'The Hike' by Drew Magary, in which the main character discovers 'the path' that he needs to follow. I'd been contemplating this concept of our life's path for some time, so coming across this book was a timely coincidence.
In thinking about acting and living with integrity and 'right values' (in yoga, the Yamas, or ethical precepts), these guidelines can be considered our supports and our beacons on our path. Sometimes we can feel pulled away from what we know is right. And there may be times when we don't always feel we can find the inner strength to stay on the right path. This is where a regular practice of yoga and meditation can give us support and guidance.
The more we come to know ourselves, to see ourselves with greater clarity, the easier it can feel to stay on 'our path'. It's so important to remember to treat ourselves with the same kindness, compassion, patience and respect that we extend towards others (and vice versa).
And remember that even if we step off the path, we can get back on! Or perhaps our path shifts. And sometimes we can assist others in finding, or seeing, their path, if we're fortunate. And to help light their path and to be a support for them when they step off their path, so they can find their way back. An important part of following our path in this life is to truly connect with others in meaningful ways.
Within each of us resides the boundless capacities for unconditional love, kindness, openness, tolerance, compassion, curiosity, fearlessness and patience. All of these qualities are much-needed, especially at this time of division and challenge, and indeed, throughout our lives.
